Albert Hoga

Albert August "Hogi" Hoga passed away peacefully on June 10, 2025, in Santa Cruz, California, at the age of 92. Born on October 27, 1932, in Detroit, Michigan, Albert lived a life marked by service, dedication, and deep faith.

After moving from Michigan to California as a young man, Albert graduated from Holy Cross High School in 1951. He soon answered the call to serve his country by joining the U.S. Navy Reserves. From 1952 to 1954, he served aboard the USS Kenneth Whiting (AV-14), contributing to the proud legacy of American naval service during a pivotal time in history.

Following his military service, Albert continued a family tradition by pursuing a career in firefighting. Inspired by his father's example as a Detroit fireman, Albert joined the Santa Cruz Fire Department in 1954. Over the next 34 years, he served with unwavering commitment and courage until his retirement in 1988. His decades of service left an enduring impact on the community he helped protect.

Albert was deeply rooted in his faith and was a devoted member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Church. He followed the Order of the Franciscans, embracing their values of humility and compassion throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Marilyn Hoga; his daughter Alene Hoga; brothers Ben Hoga and Donald Hoga; and sisters Gertrude Burkett and Betty Beauchamp.

Albert is lovingly remembered by his children: Alanna Maldonado (Javier), Antoinette Condon (Edward), and Benjamin Hoga (Anita). He also leaves behind five grandsons, four granddaughters, and ten great-grandchildren who carry forward his legacy with pride.

May Albert's memory bring comfort to those who knew him and serve as a lasting reminder of a life well lived in service to others. A Celebration of Life will be held on October 12, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 04:00 PM at Santa Cruz Elks Lodge #824 150 Jewell St.
