Alfred Carroll Swift, 87, passed away on September 27, 2025, in Chehalis, Washington. Born on January 23, 1938, in Albion, New York, Alfred—known to many as Al—led a life marked by service, adventure, and a deep appreciation for nature and family.
At the age of 18, Al began his distinguished military career by enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1956. Over the next 22 years, he served his country with honor and dedication, rising to the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. His assignments took him across the globe—from England and Labrador to California, New York, and Georgia—offering him a lifetime of experiences that shaped his worldview and fueled his love of travel.
Following his retirement from the Air Force, Al continued his commitment to public service by joining the U.S. Customs Service. For another two decades, he worked as a U.S. Customs Inspector before retiring once more—this time to Montana, where he embraced a quieter life surrounded by nature.
Al's post-retirement years were anything but idle. A passionate traveler, he explored Alaska, Europe, Hawaii, the South Pacific, Australia, and New Zealand. One of his proudest adventures was walking part of the Great Wall of China—a testament to his enduring curiosity and zest for life.
Gardening brought Al great joy throughout his life. He had a particular talent for growing vegetables and later developed a fondness for cultivating flowers. His green thumb was matched only by his love for animals; dogs were constant companions in his home. Yellowstone National Park held a special place in his heart—he visited it several times each year to reconnect with its natural beauty and abundant wildlife.
Al often reflected fondly on his childhood spent growing up on a farm—a time that instilled in him values of hard work and resilience that carried through every chapter of his life. Known for his sense of humor and warm presence, he left an impression on all who knew him.
He is lovingly remembered by his sons Dale, David, and Dean; and by three adopted daughters: Sherry-Lynn, Sharon, and Nina. also by brothers Jerry and Richard, sister Linda and many grandchildren nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents Gerald and Mary; brothers Victor, Stanley and Marvin; sisters Alvida ,Ester, Geraldine,Sharon and Nina; and three beloved wives: Thelma, Doreen, and Grace.
C/MSGT Alfred Carroll Swift's legacy is one of service, exploration, laughter, and love—for family, animals, gardens, and the world around him. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him. A Graveside Service will be held on May 16, 2026 at Sunset Memorial Gardens 1721 Central Ave, Billings, Montana . There will be a service with Military Honors scheduled in the Spring and Al will be laid to rest with his wife Grace in Montana.
