Reflection of Life
Alvin Cornelius Askew, lovingly known as "Maestro," passed from this life surrounded by his family's love and peace. He was born on September 24, 1946, to Mack Neil Askew and Vera Mae Nelson Askew. Alvin was the eldest of three children, preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Larry Askew, and is survived by his sister, Gwen Garnett.
Alvin's love for music was evident from a young age. He grew up playing the organ at Wilson Memorial Church of God in Christ, where his natural talent and heartfelt expression made him a beloved presence. His gift led him to play for numerous gospel groups and choirs, such as the CT Jurisdiction 1 COGIC State Choir, as well as local choirs, such as the Faith Baptist Church Young Adult Choir and the renown Heavenly Zion Choir.
After graduating high school, Alvin honorably served in the United States Army for three years, stationed in Texas and Germany. Following his military tour of service, life led him to Teen Challenge of Brockton, Massachusetts, where he graduated as a student and later was employed on staff as a counselor. Alvin guided others with compassion, understanding, and faith, offering the same hope he had embraced. Brother Alvin also trained and directed The Challengers, the choir associated with Brockton Teen Challenge who traveled extensively throughout the Northeast, touching many lives with gospel music and ministry.
Alvin's greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his three children: Adam Askew (Shontisha), Raena Askew-Bolden (Jason), and Ivy Askew; and his six cherished grandchildren: Braydon, Austin, Anissa, Aaron, Brielle, and Christian.
He leaves behind a wealth of his unique musical style, coupled with faith, and the love of Jesus Christ that will continue to echo through all who knew him.
Alvin will be remembered for his gentle humor, his humble strength, his enduring faith, and the way music flowed from him like it was part of his very heartbeat. His life was a song, and its melody remains.
