Bernard J. Graper, Jr., 66, of Jacksonville, FL passed away on October 8, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard J. Graper Sr. and Jean Patricia Whitehead, and his nephew, Christopher J. Graper.
Barney (known locally as 'Boston') was a familiar and cherished face in his downtown neighborhood. Despite his impaired mobility, he had a kind heart, sharp wit and warm presence and could often be found perched on his porch engaging those who walked by with a big smile, a kind word or thoughtful conversation. His love of music was evident in the way he sang classic songs word-for-word as he went about his day.
In his prime, Barney was a master carpenter who worked on many projects around Jacksonville, including the Gator Bowl and numerous office buildings downtown. While his life was sometimes marked by hardship, Barney's dignity and humanity remained undiminished.
At home, Barney had a love of coconut cake and freshly baked pastries, cooking for friends, listening to classic rock, and watching PBS/NOVA and Star Trek on television. And football, he loved football. It's especially heartbreaking that he passed away at the beginning of football season.
Barney will be remembered by those of us whose lives he touched, including his sister Janeen Graper of Dallas, brother and sister-in-law John and Deborah Graper of Jacksonville, daughter Christina Stockbridge and son Ryan Graper of New Hampshire, stepmom Caroline Graper of North Carolina, plus numerous grandchildren, cousins and his special friends, Joann Pankey and Sandy Hurt. No public services are planned.
The family asks that you honor his memory by performing a simple act of kindness for someone in need.
