Betty Jean (Cox) Powell, 94, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2025 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Born on July 8th, 1931, in Gray, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Cephus and Mary Cox. Betty Jean was one of eight siblings, including Joy Lee Cox Robertson, Cephus Cox Jr, Duane Cox, Dennis Cox, Matthew Cox, Barbara Cox Tait, and James Cox.
Throughout her long life, Betty Jean embraced her role as a homemaker, mother, and grandmother. She was blessed with three children: Sharon Norber of Fayetteville, Ohio; Mickey Baker of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida; and Don Baker of Vestavia Hills, Alabama.
Betty Jean's legacy survives through her beloved grandchildren: Matt Baker of Winter Garden, Florida; Megan Baker of Loxahatchee, Florida; Elizabeth Baker of New York, New York; Kathryn Baker of Vestavia Hills, Alabama; and numerous great-grandchildren. Her extended family also includes many nieces and nephews that hold a special place in her heart.
Betty Jean was preceded in death by her devoted former husband, Master Gunnery Sargent Ralph Powell (USMC retired), and is survived by Ralph's daughters, Dianna Jones, Mary Kaye Powell, Margaret Burklund, Brenda Collins, and Linda Ealum.
Betty Jean's life was marked by quiet strength and enduring love for her family. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
A Memorial Service is being planned for Thanksgiving Weekend at the Baker home in Vestavia Hills, Alabama.
