Mrs. Bong Thi Wheelden (Lam), age 75, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2025, in her home in Aberdeen, Maryland.
Born on May 14, 1950, in Cu Chi, Vietnam, Bong's life was defined by resilience and strength. At the age of 19, she left behind a life of hardship on her struggling family farm in Vietnam to begin anew in the United States. Arriving without knowledge of English and facing cultural challenges, she met each obstacle with quiet determination.
During the Vietnam War, Bong met Grovenor "Mickey" Wheelden, who would become her beloved husband. Their journey together took them from Vietnam to Germany and eventually to the United States, where they built a life rooted in love and mutual support. Grovenor preceded her in death.
A devoted Roman Catholic, Bong found spiritual strength as a member of St. Joan of Arc Church in Aberdeen. Her faith remained a guiding force throughout her life.
Bong had a passion for cooking and baking, often filling her home with the comforting aromas of meals that reflected both her heritage and generous spirit. She also enjoyed watching her favorite television shows—Family Feud, America's Funniest Home Videos, The Incredible Dr. Pol and Walker Texas Ranger—which brought joy and laughter into her home.
Bong dedicated over four decades of her life to working as a food service worker and baker. Her hands prepared countless meals with care and skills. Her passion for cooking and baking extended far beyond her professional life—it was one of the many ways she expressed love to those around her. Whether preparing traditional dishes or experimenting with new recipes, Bong found joy in the kitchen and shared that joy generously.
Outside of work and family life, Bong embraced a wide range of interests that brought color to her days. She enjoyed gardening, shopping excursions, chatting with friends, and volunteering at the church pantry—always eager to lend a helping hand. Her faith was an important part of her life; she worshipped at both St. Joan of Arc and Our Lady of Lavang Church.
She is lovingly remembered by her son Phillip Wheelden and his wife Brenda, and by her daughter Lee-Ann Wheelden and her wife Dianna. Her legacy endures through them and all who were touched by her kindness and perseverance.
A Funeral Service will be held on December 1, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at St. Joan of Arc Church, 222 Law St., Aberdeen, Maryland. A Mass will be held as part of the service. Burial will follow from 2:30 PM to 2:45 PM at Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery, 11501 Garrison Forest Road.
