Mrs. Bruce Joyce Powers-Freeman, 83, transitioned from this life to be with our Heavenly Father on September 27, 2025, in Sacramento, California. Born on August 29, 1942, in Sacramento to Allen Ward Powers II and Rosetta Cole Powers, Bruce was named after the doctor who assisted in her birth — a unique beginning for a woman whose life would be marked by trailblazing achievements and unwavering devotion to family.

A proud graduate of Sacramento High School's Class of 1961 and an alumna of Berkeley State College, Bruce's journey was one of resilience, versatility, and grace. Her work ethic was instilled early as she labored in the fields on her parents' farm during childhood. From those humble beginnings, she rose to break barriers as one of the first women of color to model in the glass showrooms of Macy's department stores — an accomplishment that reflected both her elegance and courage.

Bruce's professional life was as diverse as it was impactful. She built a career in telecommunications with MA and Pacific Bell as a PBX operator, served her community as a state-registered Care Home Operator, and expressed her creativity through cosmetology. In every role she undertook, Bruce brought dedication and compassion.

Her greatest legacy, however, was her family. Bruce embodied Agapé Love — selfless and unconditional — and extended it generously to all who crossed her path. She met her lifelong partner, Willis D. Freeman Jr., during their teenage years; they married soon after graduating high school and built a life centered around love and unity.

Bruce was the beloved mother of DeRae Freeman, Troy Freeman, and Sheri Freeman. She cherished her role as grandmother to more than ten grandchildren and great-grandmother to more than one great-grandchild. Her nurturing spirit also touched the lives of many nieces, nephews, extended family members, acquaintances, and friends.

She is lovingly remembered by her siblings: Allen Warren Powers, Odessa Powers-King, Julia Valerie Powers, and Wesley McDaniels. Though preceded in death by siblings Thelma Louise Powers-Burns, Frances Powers-Jones, Bernice "Tootie" Powers-Burgess, Helen Elaine Powers-Averette, Kenneth Arnold Powers, and Stanley Lloyd McDaniels, Bruce carried their memories with grace throughout her life.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, November 7, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. immediately followed by a viewing until 3:00 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial located at 3030 Fruitridge Road in Sacramento, California.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites all who knew Bruce to honor her legacy through acts of love and kindness — a fitting tribute to a woman whose heart knew no bounds.

May her memory bring comfort and inspiration to all who were blessed to know her.
