On Saturday, October 25, 2025 Burl D. Stephen went to sleep peacefully in his home at the age of 69. On Sunday, October 26, 2025, Burl woke up in the arms of his Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Burl was born to Norma Jean and Jack Stephen in Dumas, Texas on November 23, 1955. Burl was number 9 of 10 children. At a young age Burl learned his superpower of strength and influence. This was discovered when his big brother arranged and coordinated fights for him in his front yard in the small town of Perryton, Tx. He quickly became the protector and defender of his parents and seven sisters. As he entered Junior High and High School, Burl's strength and athletic ability was known through all of Perryton and surrounding towns. Burl set records in track and football. Legend has it, some of those were never broken even to this day. Rumor has it, Burl may have also been known for some mischievous shenanigans by he and his group of friends, especially his best friend and side kick, Jack Broughton. Burl considered Jack his brother and that has never changed.

When Burl D Stephen was 17, he met the love of his life, Colene Busch. He swept her off her feet with his handsome smile, confident demeanor, and famous one liner from across the Pizza Hut, "You sure are good lookin." From that moment on, Colene was his, and the rest is history. Burl D Stephen and Colene Stephen were married on August 25, 1977 in Perryton, Tx. Burl and Colene had their oldest daughter, Natasha on October 20, 1981 and their youngest daughter, Natalie on July 8, 1986.

At the young age of 23, Burl became a general foreman then was promoted to project manager for Austin Power in Chillicothe, Iowa. Later in life he ran his own business, brokering oil field equipment and offshore platforms. Throughout his career, he was known for his word being his bond. His integrity and honesty were an asset to his business.

Burl had a passion for horses. He trained the toughest horses that came straight from the racetrack and turned them into barrel racing champions. He taught his daughters to ride and compete in show and speed events as well.

Burl was Santa Claus for 45 years for his family reunions, where over 100 family members would attend. He loved his family.

Burl was passionate and outspoken about his Faith. He was adamant about the fact that baptism is essential in order to enter the Kingdom of God. He would often say, "Jesus asked you to do this." He was passionate about Matthew 28:19 and he'd like for you to read it, get it done, and stop making excuses.

On August 25, 2025 Burl and Colene celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary. Colene's description of Burl is: kind, loving, generous, gentle, affirming, fearless warrior, and "the man with a heart of gold."

Burl was preceded in death by his mother, Norma Jean Stephen; father, Jack Stephen; brothers, Deltin and Earnest; and sisters Jacqulyne and Armitta.

He is survived by his wife, Colene Stephen; his daughters, Natasha Hutson and Natalie Robles; their spouses Michael Hutson and Logan Robles; his grandchildren, Simon Hutson, Brody and Avonlea Sullivan, Grayson, Hope, Blakely, and Maci Robles; his sisters, Latoria Coleman and brother in law Wayne, Linda Young and brother in law Martin, Marzella Adamson, Nina Willeford and brother in law Walter, Wanelda Johnson; sister in laws, Kathie Rochester and Laquita Turner; as well as over 100 nieces and nephews.
