Carl DeWitt Lancaster, Jr. departed this earth on October 13, 2025, at age 82, in Odenton, MD. Born in Fayetteville, NC on June 15, 1943, he grew up in Hope Mills, NC. Carl graduated from Hope Mills High School in 1961 and maintained close relationships with classmates throughout his life. He earned his undergraduate degree in Mathematics from Methodist College in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He then relocated to Maryland where he accepted a teaching position in the Prince George's County Public Schools System. While working full-time and raising a family, he received his graduate degree in Education from Bowie State University. He was an active member of the Prince George's County Education Association, the Maryland State Teacher Association and served for 20 years as an elected member of the Board of Trustees for the State Retirement and Pension System of Maryland. While on the Board of Trustees, he served on the Investment Committee and Real Estate and Corporate Governance Subcommittees. He also served as Interim President for the Maryland School for the Blind. He was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Elkridge, MD where he especially enjoyed "coffee hour" after the Sunday service and volunteering with the "Backpack Blessings" group providing food for disadvantaged youth in the community. He enjoyed fishing, photography, woodworking and spending quality time with friends and family.
He is survived by his partner, Victoria Willard of Odenton, MD; his daughter, Victoria C. Lancaster of Forest Hill, MD; his son and daughter-in-law, Carl D. Lancaster, III, and Sybyl Lancaster; and, two grandchildren, Tyler Lancaster and Brianna Lancaster of Prince Frederick, MD; his brother, Victor H. Lancaster (Sheila) of Hope Mills, NC; sister, Judy L. Jordan (Allan) of Fayetteville, NC; and brother, Thomas L. Lancaster (Susan) of Hope Mills, NC; and many nieces and nephews. Also left to mourn his passing is a host of friends and former colleagues; and his special friends, Leticia and Daniel and their family, who will certainly miss their "Papa".
He was preceded in death by his father, Carl D. Lancaster; by his mother, Victoria Hurley Lancaster; and former wife and mother of his children, Mary C. Lancaster, who remained his constant friend throughout her life.
A Memorial Service will be held on November 8, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 7474 Washington Blvd, Elkridge, MD 21075.
