Carole Ann Howey Walt of Hingham, Massachusetts, formerly of Greenwich, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at the age of 84 on October 31, 2025. Born to Edward and Margaret (Stevenson) Howey on May 14, 1941, in Baltimore, Maryland, Carole lived a vibrant life, rooted in love for her family. During her youth, she especially cherished time spent with her beloved aunts and uncles in the Howey and Stevenson families.
Carole graduated from Ridgefield High School in Connecticut and went on to study theater in summer stock, receiving dramatic training from renowned actors and coaches including Sanford Meisner, Jack Manning, and Beth Cashman. Gifted with beauty, poise, and charisma, Carole was featured in numerous print and television commercials. She became best known as “The Winston Girl,” a campaign that ran on television and in print at the height of the 1960s and ’70s creative advertising revolution. She received fan mail from soldiers serving in Vietnam and answered every letter personally. Following her modeling career, she turned her attention to sports broadcasting when she was encouraged to audition at CBS for The NFL Today with Frank Gifford. The trailblazing program, produced and written by Marjorie Margolies, was among the first of its kind created for a female audience, and Carole’s warmth and confidence shone as she interviewed and reported for the show.
Carole married Norman Walt in 1967 after being introduced on a blind date by Frank Gifford at a Giants game. With an open heart, she became a loving stepmother to Cindy and Steve Walt. Their son William was born on her birthday in 1975, and she devoted herself to raising him, finding her greatest joy in being his mom.
She joins in death her husband, Norman Edward Walt Jr.; longtime companion (Deacon) Vincent Heidenreich; parents, Edward and Margaret (Peg) Howey; sister, Pamela (Howey) deBruijn; and her beloved aunts and uncles, whom she cherished.
Carole leaves family members to mourn her passing: son William Walt (Rev. Leanne) of Norwell, Massachusetts; stepson Stephen Walt of San Diego, California; stepdaughter Cynthia Walt (Greg Shields) of Brooklyn, New York; brother Richard (Margaret) Howey of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and brother-in-law Hans deBruijn of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Grandchildren James and William Walt, and Liam and Mia Shields. Nieces Laurel deBruijn Katz (Perry), Claudia Sherman, and Tricia Howey (Hayden Parra); nephew Edward Howey (Rebecca Zak); and great-nieces and nephew Alexa and Aiden Katz, and Calista Parra, as well as many cousins and dear friends.
Carole’s family wishes to thank Norwell VNA Hospice, as well as the Linden Ponds residents and staff who provided much happiness, friendship, and comfort to her in the last years of her life.
In Carole’s own words, “I’ve lived a fabulous life and was fortunate to have the love and support of my family.” She will be lovingly remembered by all who knew her for her dramatic flair, her larger-than-life spirit, her infectious laugh, and her radiant smile.
A funeral mass to celebrate Carole’s life will be held on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Church of the Resurrection, 1057 Main Street, Hingham, MA; reception to follow at The Range Bar & Grille, 306 Whiting Street, Hingham, MA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carole’s memory to the Macular Degeneration Foundation, P.O. Box 531313, Henderson, Nevada 89053 (eyesight.org).
