Catherine Michelle Anderson, 50, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away in her sleep on October 27, 2025.
Proudly born and raised on the Southside of Chicago, she filled her days with music, laughter, and quirky phrases like "awesome sauce" and "let's get crack-a-lackin'!" She had a heart that never stopped giving and was the kind of person who would stop her car in the middle of the road to rescue a stray dog.
An accomplished flautist, she played in youth orchestras and ensembles throughout Chicago, and served as drum major for the Morgan Park High School band. Her devotion to music extended into adulthood, where she sang in choirs at Hope Lutheran Church and Southwest Lutheran Choir, and played handbells with the Streams in the Desert Lutheran Church in Tucson, Arizona. Through voice, bells, flute, piccolo, and conducting, music was a way she spread joy to others.
Catherine graduated with honors from the University of Illinois at Chicago with a degree in Political Science, driven by a desire to make a difference. That desire gradually evolved into a life of service as Catherine began to care for those who needed help. This culminated with her moving to Tucson, Arizona to take care of her family. While there, she continued to give by volunteering with the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion Post #36, offering compassion and support to those who had served their country.
Catherine also expressed her love with food. She explored her German heritage through travel and brought back what she learned to Christkindlmarkts across the United States. You could find her hawking roasted nuts, Guinness fudge, and chocolate covered anything in farmer's markets on any given Saturday. Most of all though, she loved cooking and baking for her family— especially snickerdoodles and extravagant birthday cakes - and she took special joy in teaching her two nephews.
She is survived by her loving partner, Hunter Yoon; her father, Clifford Anderson; her mother, Bonnie Anderson; her sister, Stephanie Anderson; her brother-in-law, Kieran McDonald; her nephews Charles Anderson and Clark Anderson; her goddaughters Lea Schmid and Hanna Schmid; her two cats, Mikey and Urli; and her rabbit, Peter Hopper.
Catherine will be remembered for her warmth, her commitment to her community, and the way she filled ordinary days with excitement and joy. Whether through song, snickerdoodles, or saving strays, her spirit of generous giving will live on through others.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, Nov 15 at 11am at Streams in the Desert Lutheran Church followed by a luncheon with her favorite foods. The service will be live-streamed from https://streamstuc.org/online-worship-2/. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to Friends of Pima Animal Care Center or The Tucson Family Food Project in honor of Catherine.
Hey Catherine, one more thing: "My aunt eats pickles!”
