Constance Ann "Connie" Fortner, 75, passed away on October 8, 2025, at the IU North Hospital in Carmel, Indiana. Born on April 26, 1950, in Clinton, Indiana, Connie lived a life marked by dedication to education, deep familial love, and a passion for nurturing both people, animals and plants.
Connie earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education from Ball State University. With these credentials and an unwavering commitment to her students, she embarked on a career that would span more than two decades as a Special Education teacher with the Indianapolis Public Schools. Her work was not just a profession but a calling—she served her students with compassion, skill, and an unshakeable belief in their potential. Known for her strong will and independence, Connie was also recognized as a dedicated professional whose influence extended far beyond the classroom.
Though she never had children of her own, Connie took immense pride in the lives and accomplishments of her six nieces and nephews. Her affection for them was evident not only in her words but also in her actions; she thoughtfully included each of them in her trust as a testament to the bond they shared.
Family remained central throughout Connie's life. She is survived by her older brother Robert, younger brother Timothy, and younger sister Julia. She was preceded in death by her father Donald Ray and her mother Joyce Winifred Fortner Ellis (née Buker), whose memory she carried with grace.
Outside of her professional life, Connie found joy in the simple pleasures of gardening and caring for dogs. Her garden was a place of peace and beauty—a reflection of the care she gave to all living things—and her love for animals brought warmth to those who knew her best.
Connie's legacy is one of resilience, generosity, and unwavering dedication to others. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
Connie will be interred at Helt's Prairie Cemetery outside Clinton, Indiana, where multiple generations of ancestors are buried.
