Donald A. Aberli
January 5, 1952 - September 4, 2025
Louisville, Kentucky - Donald "Donnie" Andrew Aberli, 73, died Thursday, September 4, at home, surrounded by his family, after a brief battle with cancer.
Donnie was born January 5, 1952, in Louisville, the son of Cleo J. Aberli Bowen and Walter Paul Aberli, Sr. He attended Our Lady School (Good Shepherd), St. Joseph School, and Trinity High School, graduating in 1970.
After graduation, he attended the University of Kentucky, then returned to Louisville and began work at Liberty Bank. His career spanned over 30 years, eventually culminating in his retirement as a Senior Vice President at Chase Bank.
He served his community as the mayor of the City of Keeneland and on the City of Meadowvale's board of ethics. Donnie was a member of the Lyndon Jaycees, Knights of Columbus on River Road, and received induction into the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.
Donnie enjoyed watching his sons play sports and never missed a game. He took part in numerous recreational leagues over the years in softball, basketball, bowling, and, most recently, golf at Eagle Creek Golf Club.
Donnie was known for his humor and infectious laugh. His family and friends loved being entertained by his guitar playing, singing, and storytelling. Donnie's favorite pastimes included cheering for the Kentucky Wildcats, an early morning tee time, playing with his grandchildren, an afternoon spent watching golf, keeping his lawn pristine, going to Churchill Downs with his brothers, and making someone laugh so hard they cried.
Donnie found the joy in everyday moments, never missing an opportunity to celebrate the little things. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Donnie was special in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Susan Roecker Aberli, his children, Jason Aberli (Jessica) and Eric Aberli (Lauren); his grandchildren, Jackson, Carter, and Giana Aberli; his brothers, Perry Aberli (Georgann O'Quinn) of Florence, SC, Walter Aberli, Jr. (Loretta) of Louisville, and David Aberli of Louisville; and 10 nieces and nephews.
The family extends a special thank you to Father Shaji Joseph of Saint Bernadette Catholic Church and to Hosparus Health for their care in his final days. Donations can be made in his name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Hosparus Health.
A private Celebration of Life will be held in November.
