Donald Cran, 87, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2025. Born on October 12, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois, Don lived a life defined by quiet strength, deep devotion to family, and a legacy of personal and professional achievements.
Don spent his early years on the north side of Chicago, where he attended Amundsen High School before continuing his education at North Park University. His academic journey laid the foundation for a successful career that would span decades and leave a lasting impact. Don founded MVC Associates, Inc. in 1981, after a successful career at United Airlines. As Chairman and CEO, he grew the company into a respected technology provider for Fortune 1000 companies, earning admiration for his integrity, intelligence, and dedication.
Beyond his professional achievements, Don was a remarkable and gifted athlete, and he excelled in many sports, including football, racquetball, golf, tennis, basketball, and skiing. Whether competing or simply enjoying time outdoors, Don found joy in movement and nature. His love of sport was matched by his humility—he carried his talents with quiet confidence and grace.
Those who knew Don will remember him as a smart yet unassuming man—genuine in spirit and easygoing in demeanor. He was happiest surrounded by loved ones, enjoying time and laughs with friends, walking in the woods or on the beach with his border collies, attending his children's and grandchildren's sporting events and recitals - simple joys that reflected his essence. His laugh was infectious, his smile was authentic, and his personal connections were deep and treasured.
Above all, Don cherished his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Karen; his children, Lori, David, Greg (Kara), Mary Elizabeth; and eight grandchildren: David, James, Michael, Ashley, Aidan, Michael, Lily, and Dylan. He also leaves behind his loving sister Ann and many nieces and nephews who will remember him with affection. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Agnes, and his brother, Douglas.
Don's memory will live on through the work he did, the relationships he built, the games he played, and the lives he touched with kindness and authenticity. He was a beloved spouse, father, grandfather (Papa), brother, uncle, colleague, and friend. Forever loved, forever missed, forever remembered.
A funeral mass will be held on November 22, 2025, at the Church of St. Mary, 175 E. Illinois Rd., Lake Forest, IL 60045 at 10 AM.
