Donald Dominic DePaul passed away peacefully at the age of 87 with his loving wife, daughter, and son-in-law at his side.
Donald was born in Philadelphia in 1938 to Dominic and Cleopatra (Claire) DePaul. He grew up in Fernwood, PA where his parents and grandparents owned a local favorite pizzeria called DePaul's Pizza for 40 years.
Don earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Education at St. Joseph University in Philadelphia, PA. Initially teaching at Catholic schools, he moved with his family to Bucks County, PA where he taught at Woodrow Wilson High School (renamed Harry S. Truman High School) until he retired. He came out of retirement for several years, teaching at St. Andrew School.
As an educator, Don positively affected the lives of thousands of high school students over the years. He also tutored, taught night school, and ESL. He worked on the school yearbook and newspaper as well as created a magazine, The Mustard Seed which is still published.
Don married his first wife Tonia and they shared two children together, Marc and Kim. Don loved to travel and he and his family lived overseas where taught at Anatolia College in Thessaloniki, Greece and later at the American School of The Hague in The Hague, The Netherlands. He filmed their travels using his Bell & Howell video camera, documenting their tenting trip across Europe as well as many other adventures.
Besides being a teacher, Don was an author. His first book, Caterfly was published by the Theosophical Society in 1977. He went on to write Greek Island Madness, about his experiences living in Aegina Greece as a retiree with his wife Margie, and recently published a book called Dead 10.
Earlier in life he acted in an award winning movie by director Steven E. de Souza. Later in life he taught Tai Chi. He enjoyed playing chess and was a voracious reader of spiritual writings, literature, and history. He practiced Transcendental Meditation (TM) throughout his adult life.
In the late 1980s, he remarried Margie and they shared a loving marriage and companionship that lasted 37 years, until his passing. Together they enjoyed their times living in Aegina Greece, traveling, working together on projects and his later books, and spending time with family and friends. Don enjoyed cooking (especially making pizzas), tinkering, spending time in solitude, deep philosophical conversations, and time with close friends and family.
Don is survived by his wife Margie, his son Marc DePaul (Eva), daughter Kim Burton (Chuck), and grandson Eric.
He will forever be in our hearts.
Don's Celebration of Life will be private.
