Dr. Melanie Boyd Leak, DDS
(1955–2025)
Dr. Melanie Boyd Leak, DDS, born January 1, 1955, in Tarboro, North Carolina, entered eternal rest on September 20, 2025, in Raleigh, North Carolina, at the age of 70.
A loving wife, mother, and highly respected sister, friend, and community leader, Melanie dedicated her life to compassionate care and service. Known for her professionalism, warm spirit, elegant hats, and signature red nails, she lived with grace and purpose.
A proud fourth-generation college graduate, she began her journey at Tuskegee University, where she was a majorette in the Marching Band. She later earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from The Ohio State University, beginning a distinguished career in dentistry. She was most proud of raising her children to pursue higher education, celebrating as all four attended Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Dr. Leak was deeply committed to service and sisterhood. She was a third-generation Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, a 30-year member of The Links, Incorporated (Columbus Chapter), and a dedicated member of Girl Friends, Inc., the National Smart Set, the Women’s Auxiliary of the National Medical Association, the North Easterners, and the Birthday Club. She also served as Past President of the Columbus Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. W. David Leak; grandmother, Caroline Elizabeth O’Hara; parents, H. Thomas C. and Ruby E. Boyd; uncle and aunt, Gilbert and Jean Rivers; and cousin, Paul James Rivers.
She leaves to cherish her memory: W. Dawn Leak, Meghan Leak Benzegala, MBA (Mohammed), Mia Leak, and William Leak (Lisa); granddaughter, Cambria; siblings H. Thomas C. Boyd, Stellyne E. Curtis, Esq., Raphael O. Boyd, JD, MBA, CPA, Tyra M. Powell, MBA (Victor), and Jamilah Munir, RN ; nieces & nephews Staff (Tammy), Joshua Munir (Detrice), Dr. Marcus Cowan, DDS (Donya, PhD/MD), Lauren C. Lucas, Pharm. D (Rick), Brianna D. Powell, MBA, Brittany M. Powell, and Victoria O. Powell, MCS (Roger); great-nieces/nephews Donovan, Caden, Aubrey, Richie, and Reign; chosen family Belle Hillman (Larry), Hattie Cooper Best, Valerie Cooper, Dr. Carl Jefferies, and Raquel Davidson Brown; cousins Hon. Acie Ward, Gilbert Rivers, Mitchell Rivers, and JJ Rivers.
Funeral: Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 2811 Poole Road, Raleigh, NC 27610.
Memorial Service: Columbus, Ohio at a later date.
