December 22, 1947 - October 23, 2025

Edward James Mansfield Jr., of Rural Hall, North Carolina, passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Ed was born on December 22, 1947, in Lincoln, Michigan, to the late Edward James Mansfield Sr. and Juanita Catherine (Adams) Mansfield. He was one of six children and is survived by his siblings John Mansfield, Judy Huber, Stella Daoust, Thomas Mansfield, and William Mansfield. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Edward James Bell (Mansfield III).

A proud Vietnam Veteran, Ed served honorably in the United States Army from September 1, 1965, to October 14, 1969. He earned his Combat Infantry Badge and served 19 consecutive months in Vietnam serving with 1st Infantry Division.

After returning home, Ed married Shirley Jean Dancy, and together they raised eight children during their 20 years of marriage. Ed worked as a truck driver for 45 years, spending much of that time as a long-haul car hauler. His "gypsy soul" carried him far and wide—he lived in Texas, Louisiana, Michigan, Kentucky, and Florida before finally settling down in Rural Hall, North Carolina, to enjoy his well-earned retirement.

Ed was happiest when he was on the open road—or the open sea. He loved to cruise and was a loyal Carnival Cruiser, proudly earning his Platinum status. He never missed an opportunity to talk about his next cruise or convince someone to come along for the ride. He also adored his loyal dog, Trouble, who was his constant companion.

He leaves behind a large and loving family, including his children Crystal Atwood, Thomas Bell, Dawn (Jerry) Mansfield, Joey (Jeff) Brown, Michael Mansfield, Tricia (Kevin) Kerperien, John (Jennifer) Mansfield, Shirley (Conor) O'Leary, James (Sala) Mansfield, Tami Jo (Josh) Underwood, William (Sarah) Mansfield, Justin Mansfield, and Caden Colley. Ed was blessed with 32 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, along with many extended family members who loved him dearly.

Ed will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his sense of humor, his love of cruising, and his endless stories from the road and the sea.
