Mr. Edward "Eddie" Turnbow passed away on October 19, 2024, in Redford Charter Township, Michigan, at the age of 90.
Born on August 29, 1934, in Sunflower County, Mississippi, Edward embarked on a life defined by dedication and quiet dignity. At just 17 years old, he began his career with the United States Post Office—Branch 1—in 1952. Over the next several decades, he became a beloved figure along Route 1829, earning the affectionate nickname "Eddie the Mailman." His commitment to his work was unmatched; he never missed a single day and retired in 1989 with enough unused sick, personal, and vacation time to complete a full forty years of service.
Edward's life beyond his profession mirrored the same steady rhythm that marked his career. He found joy in long brisk walks and remained deeply engaged with current events through his daily ritual of reading the Detroit Free Press from cover to cover.
Those who knew Edward remember him as a gentleman—gracious in demeanor and steadfast in character. His legacy endures not only through his exemplary service but also in the many lives he touched throughout his years on the postal route and within his community.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
