Elaine Peters, a lifelong educator and advocate for the arts, died on October 26, 2025.
Elaine grew up with a love of learning and earned a Ph.D. in education. Over the years, she called many places home, including New York, Milwaukee (twice!), Chicago, Fort Worth, the Berkshires and New York City. In each, she built lasting friendships and found beauty in art.
Her lifelong passion for art history led her to volunteer as a docent at the Kimbell Museum Art, the Clark Art Institute, the Williams College Museum of Art and finally at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she shared her insights and enthusiasm with many visitors from around the world.
Elaine loved her family: her husband, Gene, who died in 2007, her two children, Susan and Erik, daughter-in-law, Betsy, and her superstar grandchildren, Max, Teddy and Clark. She cherished her friends, especially Ann Kleiman, maintaining meaningful connections spanning decades and geography.
We will miss her sharp mind, fabulous sense of style and abundance of opinions.
Contributions in Elaine's memory can be made to the ACLU, Immigrant Defense Project or Jericho Project.
