Enid Silver Ship, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on October 13, 2025.
Enid adored her husband Arthur Ship for 59 years. She was the loving mother of Andrew Ship (Barb Ship), and Amy Ship (Rob Cohen); cherished grandmother of Hannah Ship, Ari Cohen (z”l), Jeremy Cohen (z”l), and Jonah Cohen; dear sister of Patricia Levinson.
Enid graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and Sarah Lawrence College. She then worked in editorial roles at Mademoiselle Magazine and Scientific American. In 1958, she married Arthur, whom she met on a blind date only 8 months prior.
During their life together, Enid’s greatest joy was cooking. She was an amazing chef, and enjoyed every aspect of food preparation, creating extraordinary meals every night of the week. She delighted in all aspects of entertaining from conceiving menus to setting an elegant table. When she and Arthur travelled, she’d take “taste notes,” then come home to recreate dishes she’d eaten by remembering their flavors.
Enid devoted much of her life to raising her children and making a beautiful home. Once her children were mostly grown, she began to write profiles for the Sarah Lawrence College Alumni Bulletin and then joined the Board of Trustees. This culminated in her becoming the Chair of the Board there. She reveled in this role, appreciating the opportunity to engage with the academic community and tackle complex issues.
With Arthur, she enjoyed travelling widely to Europe, Asia, and South America, learning about diverse cultures and cuisines. She also made life-long friends on these trips, with whom she was in touch until her death.
In 2010, when Arthur needed to move to an assisted living facility, Enid sold their home of nearly 50 years and moved there to be with him. After he died 7 years later, Enid moved to Dedham to be closer to her daughter and her family. She felt very fortunate to have the community and opportunities at Newbridge, where she joined a regular roundtable, a weekly shabbat dinner group, took classes on opera and history, and attended performances at the American Repertory Theater.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 16 at 10:00 AM at Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard Street, Brookline, MA 02446. Burial will be at Cedar Park and Beth El Cemetery, 735 Forest Avenue, Paramus, NJ 07652.
