Ernie Lucero passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on Oct. 11, at the age of 80, after battling cancer.

Ernie was born on July 20, 1945, in Woodland, to Aurelio and Mercedes Lucero. He attended Woodland High, where he lettered in multiple sports. He continued his education at Yuba Community College and UC Davis.

In 1966 he married the love of his life, Sylvia Mendez, who he met in high school while working at Yolo Grocery. From there, Ernie had a long career at UC Davis retiring after 42 years.

Throughout his life, Ernie was a devoted husband and father, coaching baseball, basketball, and track for his children. When he wasn't coaching, Ernie was at every practice and every game, cheering on his kids. In addition to maintaining a lifelong fitness regime, Ernie was an avid baker, receiving special requests from family and friends.

Ernie was a shining star in our lives. His smile and dad jokes will forever light our hearts.

Ernie was preceded in death by his wife Sylvia. He is survived by his children, James (Lettie) and Jennifer Lucero. He is also survived by siblings Luis Lucero and Gloria Fernandez.

A rosary will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 5:30 p.m., at Mc Nary's Chapel, 458 College St, Woodland, CA 95695. The funeral Mass will be held in the gym at Holy Rosary School, 505 California St., Woodland, CA 95695 on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 10:00 a.m.
