Ernst M. Graw, a respected and beloved Texas band director, passed away on October 27, 2025, in Dallas, Texas, at the age of 87.

Born on June 17, 1938, in Texas, Ernst graduated with honors from Uvalde High School in 1957. He studied music at Sul Ross State Teachers College in Alpine, where he performed with the Concert Band, and later earned a master’s degree from Texas A&I University in Kingsville.

Ernst began his teaching career in Van Horn and then served at Hondo High School. He later returned home to direct the Uvalde High School Band before continuing on to Freer High School, where his students earned multiple honors. Frequently called upon as a regional judge for drum-major and twirling competitions across South Texas, Ernst was widely regarded for his high standards and encouraging leadership. He concluded his band-directing career at Lytle High School, taking special pride in mentoring young musicians and strengthening the program for future classes.

After retiring from education, Ernst stayed active for over two decades driving for the Texas Test Fleet in Devine, a role he enjoyed for its cars and camaraderie. He moved to San Antonio in 2019 and more recently to Dallas to be closer to family.

A proud Eagle Scout, Ernst devoted much of his youth and early adulthood to the Boy Scouts of America. He served on staff at Camp Fawcett (Barksdale, TX) and at Philmont Scout Ranch (Cimarron, NM), supported council camporees and national jamborees, and was an early member of the Sahawi Indian Dancers—sharing tradition, showmanship, and service.

Ernst was also known for his rich bass voice and a lifelong love of singing, especially the hymns he lifted in church. That deep, steady bass became part of his signature: warm, grounding, and unmistakably Ernst.

He was preceded in death by his parents, longtime Uvalde residents Ernst A. and Flora Graw. He is survived by his brother, Julius Graw of Dallas; his nieces, Kathleen (Jay) Collier of Denver, Colorado, and Lorraine (Joseph) Sarles of Los Angeles, California; his nephew, Christopher from Dallas; one great-niece; and one great-nephew. He also leaves behind an extended family of former students, Scouts, and colleagues across South Texas who carry forward his love of music, learning, and community.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on November 3rd at 10am at Rushing Estes Knowles Mortuary in Uvalde.
