Frances Pohorsky, of Sunnyvale, California, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2025. She was born on September 30, 1928, in Medzilaborce, Slovakia. She died the day after her 97th birthday, surrounded by the love of her sons.

Frances was the daughter of Regina Rachel Schwartz. She grew up in a close-knit Jewish family that ran a small inn and tavern. Her father was Emanuel Menachem Garfunkel, also born in Medzilaborce. Her childhood was forever changed by World War II. Frances survived the Auschwitz concentration camp alongside two of her brothers—a testament to her strength and resilience.

After the war, Frances rebuilt her life with courage and hope. She briefly worked as an optometrist’s assistant in Australia before moving to Italy. There she met Peter Pohorsky, a kind-hearted man who became her husband. They later immigrated to the United States under sponsorship of a farm family in North Dakota. Then they moved to California, where they raised their three sons: Jerry, Steve and Tom.

A talented and determined woman, Frances built a successful career in real estate. She earned her broker's license while her sons attended Homestead High School. She purchased land in Saratoga, California, and designed a beautiful home overlooking Silicon Valley. Her success allowed her to give her sons a head start in real estate. She gave each of them the down payment for their first homes.

After retirement, Frances found joy in painting and gardening. Her acrylic landscapes adorned the walls of her home. Each canvas was a quiet celebration of beauty and perseverance. Frances also enjoyed caring for the plants in the large garden that thrived under her gentle touch.

After a couple of falls and broken bones, Frances sold her home and moved to a retirement facility where she received care and support from the staff. Even as she faced Alzheimer’s and Dementia, her spirit remained gentle and dignified.

Frances is survived by her sons Jerry, Steve, and Tom. Her husband Peter passed away in his sleep in 2014.

Frances encouraged those who knew her to excel in their passions, reminding them, “There’s always room at the top.” Her sons each found a niche in which they thrived.
