After completing his education, he served in the Army Reserves, demonstrating his commitment to country early on.
Gary’s professional journey was both distinguished and impactful. He began his career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), where he contributed to national efforts with diligence and discretion. His work later extended to the space program during the Apollo missions—an era that defined American innovation and exploration. Gary continued his career as a Program Manager with Unisys, where he applied his leadership skills and technical expertise to complex projects.

His generosity knew no bounds, and he remained loyal and devoted to both family and friends throughout his life. Honesty was a cornerstone of who he was; those who knew him trusted him implicitly.
Outside of work and service, Gary found joy in woodworking and fishing—activities that reflected both his patience and creativity. He was an avid supporter of the Iowa Hawkeyes and cherished time spent with family above all else.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife Carol Havran; son David Havran and daughter-in-law Shelly Havran; grandson Will Havran; granddaughter Charlotte Havran; daughter Kuturah (Havran) Roth and son-in-law Troy Roth; grandson JJ Roth; and granddaughter Madison Roth.
