Gay Era "Nana" Burke (née Slaughter), age 84, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2025, in Apple Valley, California, just one day before her 85th birthday. Born on October 27, 1940, in Fostoria, Texas, Gay lived a life marked by devotion—to her family, her faith, and the many communities she served.

Gay began her professional journey in the medical field on the clerical side at MD Anderson. After taking time away from her career to raise her children, she later became an EMT and co-founded a family-run convenience store in Tow, Texas. Her dedication to healthcare continued through her years of service at the Kingsland Hoerster Clinic in medical records and later with Baylor Scott and White until her retirement. Her career reflected not only a strong work ethic but also a deep commitment to helping others.

A woman of many passions and talents, Gay embraced life with enthusiasm and joy. She was known for her adventurous spirit—whether can-can dancing or flying planes over the Scottish countryside. She found great fulfillment in volunteering and was always ready to lend a hand where it was needed most. Reading brought her quiet joy, while time spent with her grandchildren brought laughter and love into every corner of her life.

Gay's faith was central to who she was. A devoted follower of God in every way, she attended Highland Lakes Church of Christ for many years and lived out her beliefs through acts of kindness and service.

She is lovingly remembered by her sons: Lee Burke and his wife Sharon; Jeff Burke; and David Burke and his wife Tracy. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: AnneMarie Gay Burke, Stefanie Burke Nash, Natalie Burke, Barrett Burke, and Brinley Burke; as well as her great-grandchildren: Andrew Burke and Theodore Nash.

Gay now joins in rest her beloved husband Russell "Rusty" Burke; cherished daughter Deena Pye; parents Henry and Frankie Lena Slaughter; and sisters Martha Sue Baker and Olivia "Tush" Smith.

Her warmth, generosity, and vibrant spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those whose lives she touched. A Funeral Service and luncheon will be held on November 22, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Tow Community Center 135 County Rd 221.
