George Richard Payne, 79, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2025, in Oxford, Michigan. Born on May 5, 1946, in Highland Park, Michigan, George lived a life marked by dedication—to his family, his work, and his passions.

George left high school to proudly serve in the United States Air Force from December 11, 1963, to February 2, 1966. Stationed at K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, he completed his GED before receiving an honorable discharge. He continued to carry the values of service and discipline with him throughout his life.

George built a long and respected career as a Parts Manager for several Ford dealerships across Michigan. He began at Flannery Ford, where fate introduced him to Margaret—the woman who would become his beloved wife. Together they built a life rooted in love and shared traditions. When George moved his family to Oxford, he continued his career at Thomas Ford in Lapeer before concluding his full-time work at Skalnek Ford in Lake Orion. Even after retirement, George remained active in the automotive world by contracting with various Ford dealerships across the state to implement an inventory system he had developed himself—a testament to both his ingenuity and commitment to excellence.

Family was central to George’s life. He shared a deep bond with Margaret until her passing on August 27, 2025. Their marriage was filled with laughter and companionship—often around a card table on Saturday nights with friends or during poker games that became more frequent after retirement. George’s love for poker even took him to Las Vegas multiple times to compete in the World Championship Poker tournaments.

He was a devoted father to NancyAnn Payne-Butkis and her late brother Matthew Payne (who passed away in March 2020). George found great joy in spending time outdoors hunting and fishing—first with Matt and later with his grandson Stefan. Golf outings on Father’s Day became cherished traditions shared across generations.

George's legacy continues through his daughter NancyAnn and her husband Matthew Butkis; grandchildren Stefan, Margaret, Christian, Teddy, and Sean; and great-granddaughter Skylar. His presence will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Known for his quick wit and smart-aleck humor, George had a gift for making people laugh. He was calm under pressure—dependable and steady—and always there when someone needed him.

May the memory of George Richard Payne bring comfort to those who knew and loved him. A Celebration of Life will be held on October 16, 2025, from 04:00 PM to 08:00 PM at his home: 968 Beckley Street, Oxford, MI. All are welcome to come share memories and funny stories!
