Gerald Pociask, resident of Garfield, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2025, at the age of 78. He was a great man with an immeasurable heart who loved, protected, and provided for his family, animals, God, and country.
Gerald was born in the years following the Great Depression, on December 27, 1946, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He was the third child of 3 boys, preceded by his brothers, Myron and Bernard. Raised in Bridgeport, Gerald was known for his kindness, work ethic, love of animals, and beaming smile. He knew what it was like to struggle and how to make the best of everything. His classmates in high school said he had a great personality, was a good friend, and was always part of fun times. After high school, Gerald served in the United States Army, where he dedicated five years to America, from 1967-1972. After his military service, Gerald was employed by Remington Arms.
In the early 1970s, Gerald married and moved to Garfield, where he showed his deep love for family and community. He became a member of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Passaic and was very active in the church. He was a devout Catholic who endured struggles in life but his spirit always remained kind and good-natured. He would do anything in his power to help another person, or animal, in need, continuously practicing the qualities instilled in him by family and church. These were qualities that he would pass down to his children. During this time, Gerald worked for the Sumitomo Machinery Corporation, in Teterboro, as a forklift operator. He truly earned the respect and friendship of all who knew him. He loved a joyous time and laughter, and for a short time, a drink and a good cigar. He was a real “get down and boogie” kind of guy.
Gerald’s greatest joy in life was his family. He was a devoted father and grandfather who took pride in every milestone and moment shared together. His sense of humor, generosity, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
He is survived by his son, John Pociask, and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Pociask, by his daughter, Cynthia Washburne, and son-in-law Evan Washburne, and by his brother, Myron Pociask. Gerald is also survived by his five grandchildren: Casey, Ava, Jaden, Leana, and Emilia. Gerald was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary, and brother, Bernard.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial “end-of-life” celebration will take place in the coming months for family and friends. Gerald will be remembered for his warmth, integrity, and the love he shared so freely with everyone around him. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gerald’s memory to the American Cancer Society or the National Kidney Foundation.
