Glenn Leroy Bynum, M.D.
July 2, 1935 - September 27, 2025
Glenn Leroy Bynum, M.D., a devoted physician, father, veteran, and community advocate, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2025, in Chicago, Illinois, at the age of 90. Born on July 2, 1935, in Detroit, Michigan, Glenn was the second of six children born to Leroy Crawford Bynum and Annie Moorer Bynum. He grew up alongside his siblings Dolores, Ernie, Melvin, Audrey, and Derrick, in a home filled with love, ambition, and strong family values.
A bright student, Glenn graduated from Cass Technical High School in 1952 and earned his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Wayne State University in 1956, both in Detroit before going on to receive his medical degree in 1962 from the esteemed Howard University in Washington, D.C. Following medical school, Glenn proudly served his country as a captain in the United States Air Force.
After his service, Glenn dedicated his life to the health and well-being of the people on the West Side of Chicago. Over the course of more than four decades, he practiced family medicine with tireless devotion, often caring for multiple generations of families and delivering over 4,000 babies during his career. He was on staff at Garfield Park and Bethany hospitals and was part of the team that spearheaded the building of a new Bethany Hospital. Glenn finished his career at
Bethany Hospital as the Chairman of the Governing Council and Vice President for Medical Management. He wasn't just a doctor to his patients—he was a trusted advisor, a steady presence, and a source of compassion and support in times of need.
In addition to his medical practice, Glenn was a legendary presence in the world of boxing. As a ringside physician for both amateur and professional matches from 1968 through the spring Golden Gloves tournament of 2025, he ensured the safety of countless athletes. Virtually every boxer who passed through Chicago over the past five decades was examined by "Doc" Bynum— his steady hand and clinical expertise was a constant in the sport he loved.
Glenn was married for 20 years to Juanita Bynum. Together they raised two children, Dana—born on Glenn's own birthday—and Galen. He was a proud father who passed on his values of hard work, education, and service to others. Glenn was raised in a Christian family and was a faithful member of Christ the Mediator Lutheran Church on the near South Side of Chicago for 57 years.
Glenn Bynum's legacy is one of deep commitment—to his family, to his patients, to his friends, and to his community. His calm strength, sharp intellect, and gentle sense of humor will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is survived by his children Dana R. Bynum and Galen Bynum, his sister Audrey Bibbs, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, and colleagues.
