Gordon Allen Hellstrom passed away peacefully at home on October 8, 2025, in Holladay, Utah. He was 100 years old. He is now reunited with the love of his life and other family members. Gordon was a general contractor who built several custom homes, truck distribution centers, restaurants, convenience stores, and gas stations. He built throughout the Intermountain West and Mexico where he built vacation homes for Americans. Gordon never advertised, he did not need to. His work ethic, craftsmanship, reputation, and honesty were all he needed. His work stood on its own. If he built a home for you and it has not been demolished, it is still standing and in good shape.
Gordon was born on August 26, 1925 in Salt Lake City to Antone and Vera Hellstrom; he was the fifth child of eight. He attended Jordon High School and after graduating, served in the Navy in WWII. He semi-retired from construction when he had a heart attack at 91 but kept working until he was 96. He was artistic and strived for perfection in everything he did. He was incredibly strong and stubborn but hid a vulnerable side shown to few. He loved boating and enjoyed taking family and friends to Lake Powell in the summer and fall.
His great journey began when he met MaryJane Dunyon at Earl's Ice Cream Shop in Midvale, Utah, and it lasted 77 years until her passing on Dec. 19, 2021. Gordon was also preceded in death by his son, Larry, and grandson Jeff Ercanbrack. He is survived by his son Gordon Paul and wife Lucille, their sons Cory and Tracy; grandchildren Ashley and Audrey and several great grandchildren; Dr. Candace Hellstrom-Kinder and husband, Dave Kinder, Claudia Hellstrom, Ana Smith Sullivan and husband Mark Sullivan, their children Miles and Maya. He was loved by his family of nieces and nephews as well as his friends.
Gordon was an animal lover, and they loved him. It did not matter whether it was a cat, a dog, or a raccoon, he was the critter whisperer. A love that transferred to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
We want to thank the incredible support team at Intermountain Healthcare, Danville Support Services, and the Holladay paramedics for aiding our father in his last days. Without their professional support, compassion, and caring, he would not have been able to pass peacefully in the home that he built. A celebration for both Gordon and Mary Jane Hellstrom will be held at the First Baptist Church on 777 South, 13th East, Salt Lake City, Utah on Saturday, November 15, 2025, from 11:00 to 2:00. Please join us in honoring these two beautiful souls.
