Gregory WInston Methvin

METHVIN,GREGORY WINSTON, 76, of Jacksonville, FL passed away peacefully on Friday, January 12th, 2001 after a fierce battle with cancer & his strong faith in Christ never failing. He was distinguished Veteran of World War Ii & served bravely in the Invasion of Normandy, where he lost two brothers beside him there. He survived & after recovery attended the Univ of Fla in Gainesville, FL where his roommate was Hanz Tansler, who became his longtime friend & Mayor of Jax, FL. Gregory was born on Veterans Day & graduated from University of Fla &
Univ of Fla School of Law, never losing his GO GATOR LOVE. As he loved sports, he became an honored Football Coach & Teacher/Mentor @ Baker County Sr. High School where he retired. He brought football teams to State Championship status numerous years until retirement & is often remembered by numerous players as mentor & strong support given in their lives. After retirement, he also was employed by the Columbia County Sheriff's Dept.. Daddy was preceded in
death by his parents, Albert & Ounita Methvin, & remained a friend/soul mate with his ex-wife Juanelle Combs Bennett.
Survivors include three
devoted daughters, Debra L. Strickland (Dennis) of Jacksonville, Sharon Jackson
and Cathy Bales (Tim) both of Macclenny, FL. Sister, Marjorie Davis & Brother Donnie Methvin, both of
Jacksonville. God truly blessed his life with his loving Son-in-Law, Dennis Strickland of Mandarin
who traveled many miles
& mountains beside him while living with Dennis & Deb in Jacksonville before Nursing Home was required
His stories while staying with them will be always cherished.He also survived
by four grandchildren and one great grandson, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins & other relatives, friends & his loving Church friends in Faith.
The family would like to extend their appreciation & love to those "special" caregivers that gave so much from their hearts during Daddy's courageous battle & visitors from the Catholic Church he had attended & loved. Family will receive & welcome friends Friday, Jan 12th from 6-8:00 PM at the Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service
will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, January 15th, 2001 in the chapel of ARLINGTON PARK FUNERAL HOME,
6920 Lone Star Rd., Jacksonville, FL
Interment will follow across the street in Arlington Park Cemetary.
