Gregory P. Uekman, AIA, 68, of Bethesda, Maryland, passed away in Rockville, Maryland, on July 22 after several decades living with brain cancer.
A native of North Little Rock, Arkansas, he graduated from Catholic High School in Little Rock. The first in his family to attend college, he earned an architecture degree in 1980 from the University of Arkansas and got his start working for world-renowned architect E. Fay Jones.
Greg practiced architecture for 40 years in the Washington, D.C. area at Kress Cox Associates, Kerns Group Architects, and his own firm, Uekman/Architects. A longtime member of The American Institute of Architects, he won national design awards for St. David's Episcopal Church in Ashburn, Va., and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Piscataway, Md., as well as numerous state and local design awards.
Greg was an avid runner and birder, traveled widely, loved jazz and NBA basketball, and admitted to being a news junkie.
He is survived by his loving wife Ann Dorough, brothers Michael and Dennis Uekman of Arkansas, and many nieces, nephews, and godsons. He was preceded in death by his parents, Casper "Bill" Uekman and Helen Gershner Uekman.
