Harlan Mark TenPas, 71, of Oconomowoc, WI, died on Sunday, October 12, 2025. He was the son of the late Harold and Dorothy (Dekker) TenPas and grew up on their 56 acre farm. Harlan attended Oostburg High School where he graduated in 1972. Harlan received a bachelor’s degree in accounting at UW Milwaukee in 1975, and an MS in taxation and Juris Doctorate from DePaul University in 1977 and 1983, respectively. In 1976, Harlan began working in derivatives taxation at Checkers Simon and Rosner, which eventually merged into American Express in 1993 and later, RSM McGladrey.
Harlan met Sandra Mary Wilson, of Oconomowoc, WI, on a Greyhound bus in 1977. They were married at St. Jerome’s Church in her hometown on July 29th 1979. While living in Chicago, Harlan served as treasurer of the First United Methodist Church, Chicago Temple in the late 1980s. In 1991, he moved to Lake Forest, IL, where he would become an Awana and Boy Scouts Leader for his two sons, and become involved with Winnetka Bible Church and Christ Church Lake Forest. Harlan enjoyed attending his sons’ swim meets and wrestling matches, as well as taking them and their friends sailing and waterskiing at their summer home.
After surviving a stroke in 2014, Harlan made friends with a number of patients at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and started Apres Aphasia, a club for individuals with aphasia and their families.
Harlan is survived by his wife, Sandra; two sons Matthew and Mark; four brothers, Jeff, Carl, Richard, and David; four sisters, Nancy (Josiah) Mary (Weiskamp), Terri (Rogahn), and Julie (Newton).
A funeral to celebrate Harlan’s life will take place at Christ Church Lake Forest at 11 AM on Thursday, October 16, followed by a light luncheon.
