Helen Babchik Solomon died on October 11th at the age of 83 from complications from a stroke.
Helen was born in Poland in September 1942. She is the daughter of Pearl and George Babchik, both Holocaust survivors. On February 28, 1949, Helen along with her parents and her brother Jack came to the United States (her sister Karen would be born later that year in June 1949.)
Helen graduated as valedictorian of her class at Seward Park High School. She attended Brooklyn College where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a master’s degree in education.
Helen worked as a teacher and during the summer as a counselor. It was at summer camp that she met her husband Steve and the two married in March of 1965. They had three children, (whom she referred to as her “claim to fame”) Randi (Mazzella), Keith and Matthew Solomon.
After several years at home raising her children, Helen decided to return to her career in teaching, becoming a Reading Specialist in Brooklyn, NY, retiring in 2008.
Helen loved watching General Hospital, playing games like canasta and scrabble, going to NYC musicals and having lunches with her teacher friends, the CHATTs. Most of all she loved spending time with her siblings, children and grandchildren.
Helen is survived by her three children, their spouses (Rich, Corinne and Jodi), nine grandchildren (Allie, Jenny, Jason, Rebecca, Mikee, Jessie, Shawn, Mia and Kaylee), her beloved brother and sister, Jack Babchik and Karen Stenzler, and three nephews Justin Stenzler, Paul and Michael Babchik.
