Howard Lobert, age 98, peacefully passed away over the weekend to reunite with his beloved Joan (OBM). A man of quiet significance, Howard made a lasting impact in the world of technology, though he remained humble about his many accomplishments.
Born and raised in the era of innovation, Howard served proudly in the U.S. Navy during World War II, participating in the South Pacific campaign before reaching his 18th birthday. At age 21, he married his lifelong partner, Joan, in Newport, Rhode Island.
A naturally talented mechanic, Howard inherited his skills from his father, a Romanian immigrant of the early 1900s. He was an innovator and a pioneer—installing the first air conditioner in his home, building televisions from scratch for his family, and developing the first heart-lung machine for the Cleveland Clinic—all while working at IBM. Later, he founded his own company, Data-Tron, leasing desktop computers, which was eventually acquired by Avnet.
Howard's legacy lives on through his daughters, Enid (David) Slaby and Ellison (Mark) Ostrovsky; his grandchildren, Jason, Justin (Sarah), Jaryn (Jonathan), and Alexandra (Jeremiah); and his great-grandchildren, Hanna, Emily, Delilah, and James.
A service to honor Howard's life will be held on Thursday, November 20th, at 10 a.m. at the Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Memorial Chapel, 1985 S. Taylor Road, Cleveland Heights, OH. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Cemetery, 27855 Aurora Road, Solon, OH.
