Nijole Maria Rivas, age 86, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2025, in Naperville, IL. Born on May 17, 1939, in Kybartai, Lithuania, Nijole was a woman of quiet grace and independence. Her life was marked by a thoughtful, private nature and her beautiful blue eyes, which reflected her deep inner strength.
After immigrating to the United States, she began a new life defined by determination and perseverance. She lived in Chicago, where she graduated from Maria High School and attended nursing school, leading to a fulfilling career as an office manager. Nijole later moved to Naperville, where she and her husband, Edgar Rivas, shared 30 years of marriage, raised their family, and where she made her home for more than 53 years.
Beyond her professional life, Nijole was an avid reader who found joy and tranquility in her gardening, sewing, and traveling. Her love for travel took her on countless adventures abroad and across the U.S., where she especially enjoyed visiting national parks and creating lasting memories.
Nijole was a beloved mother and grandmother, survived by her children, Ed Rivas (Laura), George Rivas, and Ina Rajewski (Dan); and her grandchildren, Alex, Barbara, Matt, and Ally (Logan). She was preceded in death by her parents, Maria and Augustinas Zigaitis; her brother, Edmund Zigaitis; and her former husband, Edgar Rivas.
In keeping with her wishes, Nijole's life will be honored in a private family gathering. She will be remembered for her strength, grace, and the deep love of her family and those closest to her.
