Jacob L. “Jake” Dillon Jr., 89, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2025, in Charlestown, West Virginia. Born on August 27, 1936, in Baltimore, Maryland, Jake lived a life defined by passion, perseverance, and a deep connection to the world of horses.

From an early age, Jake demonstrated remarkable athletic talent. In his youth, he was an accomplished baseball player and was honored with an invitation to join the Baltimore Orioles’ Triple-A team—a testament to his skill and dedication to the sport. He also had a lifelong love for golf and could often be found on the green enjoying the game well into his later years.

After graduating from high school, Jake served a short enlistment with the National Guard, reflecting his sense of duty and commitment to service. However, it was in the world of horse racing that he found his true calling. With an unwavering love for horses, Jake became a respected racehorse owner and trainer. His name became well known within the industry for his integrity, knowledge, and deep respect for the animals he worked with. His contributions left a lasting impact on those who shared his passion for equine sports.

Jake’s legacy lives on through those who knew and loved him. He is survived by his devoted partner Donna J. Lacey; his son Matt R. Dillon; his daughter Sherry R. Lurie; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father Jacob L. Dillon Sr.; mother Pearl E. Ward; special aunt Ida L. Dillon; brother Harry M. Dillon; daughter Corinne D. Bowen and sister’s Shirley A. Parman; and Mary E. Coghill.

A memorial gathering will be held at a later date to honor Jake’s life and legacy.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the West Virginia Horse Network, a nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing horses and other farm animals—an effort close to Jake’s heart.

May Jacob “Jake” Dillon Jr.’s memory bring comfort to all who knew him and serve as a reminder of a life lived with purpose and passion.
