OBITUARY for JAMES DOUGLAS HILL
August 5, 1949 - March 5, 2025

Update: We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for the many cards, flowers, and kind words in the time after Douglas' passing. Your sympathy and support have been of great comfort to the Hill Family.

James "Douglas" (Doug) Hill, 75, most recently of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed away on March 5, 2025, in the arms of his loving wife and surrounded by his loved ones after several years of valiantly battling numerous health challenges.

His wife, Gwendolin, extends her most sincere gratitude to the many friends and teams of healthcare providers who helped make his last days cheerful and comfortable: Ms. Dorothy Royal, his entire team at St. Joseph's Hospice, and the staff at Flannery Oaks Guesthouse.

Douglas has always been grateful for what he called a 'blessed life' and the gifts that were bestowed upon him. A curious, brilliant mind, a powerful left arm as baseball pitcher, an eclectic taste in music and literature, and a big, strong heart always open to the world and fiercely loving all those he held in there: first and foremost his family and loved ones. The foundation for this fulfilled life lay in his Quaker roots that grew stronger during his time boarding at Westtown School.

Douglas had a distinguished career of more than 40 years in the nuclear industry as leading expert for human factors engineering and instrumentation and control. His work took him around the United States and later, around the world to countries such as Australia, Japan, Korea, Scotland, Sweden and Germany, where he lived for almost a decade and met his wife, Gwendolin.

Douglas maintained many decades-long professional relationships -many of which deepened into treasured, close friendships. His professional integrity inspired many people he trained and mentored over the years. This legacy will live on for generations to come.

Douglas is survived by Gwendolin, his wife, his children, Emrys (Mindy), Kaila (Josh), twins Jeffrey (Aegis) and Lyra, 6 grandchildren, his brothers Dan and Tom Hill, in-laws and many nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his brothers Charlie Hill, MD and David Hill, and his parents Russell Charles Hill and Elisabeth Cook Hill.

Douglas will live on in our hearts.

May his beautiful soul rest in peace.

A private ceremony to celebrate his life and to spread Douglas' ashes will be held for family and close friends. Please contact Gwendolin for details of the private service.
