Born in Orlando, Florida, on January 21, 1944, to James Dean Gough and Martha Jane Stockman, Jim stood out from an early age for his rare combination of athleticism, intellect, and warmth. These qualities shaped not only his personal relationships but also his remarkable professional journey.
He earned both his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees from the University of Kansas before pursuing specialized training in psychiatry. Guided by deep purpose and empathy, he dedicated his career to helping others, including children and adolescents, navigate life's most difficult challenges. For many years in Arizona, Dr. Gough provided thoughtful and compassionate psychiatric care, greeting every patient with warmth, humor, and genuine understanding.
Between 1970 and 1972, Dr. Gough served with distinction in the United States Public Health Service (USPHS), including a posting with the Special Forces of Service in Atlanta, Georgia. Jim's professional accomplishments were matched only by his unforgettable personality. Known for his quick wit and infectious humor, he brightened every room he entered. His spontaneous rhymes, playful spirit, and deep appreciation for good company made him truly larger than life. To know Jim was to love him. Despite his many gifts, he remained humble, always drawn to the underdogs, the dreamers, and anyone in need of encouragement. He inspired and uplifted those around him, serving as a mentor, confidant, and cherished friend.
At his core, Jim was a true humanist. He chose a career in psychiatry not for prestige, but to serve humanity with humility and compassion. He believed deeply in the power of connection and the importance of kindness in a world that too often forgets to be kind.
