James William Hammond—a gifted engineer, spirited storyteller, and beloved husband—passed away on October 17, 2025, in Bluffton, SC. Born in Illinois and spending most of his adult life in Wisconsin, James recently made the Lowcountry his home alongside his wife, Shelley (Chenoweth), bringing with him a boundless curiosity to explore nature, and a quick wit that endeared him to all.

He was the cherished son of Richard "Dick" and Christine Hammond, and brother to the late Richard "Rick" Hammond and his surviving sister, Tamera Burian (Virgil Brewer).

James was a hard working and loving father to his two daughters, Jessica (Cam Newberry) and Rachel (Ethan Walker-Hammond). They carry forward his intellect, creativity, humor, and love of building—whether projects, memories, or laughter.

Professionally, James thrived as an engineer, driven by a passion for innovation and a hands-on approach to problem-solving. He found joy in imagining better ways to do things and bringing new ideas to life.

Personally, James loved to play guitar, sports, telling "that was my nickname in college" jokes, and spending the day at the beach or the pool while listening to music.

James lit up the room with his humor, his stories, and his gift for making others feel at ease. His legacy lives on in the laughter he sparked, the inventions he crafted, and the deep love he poured into his family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at Faith Community Church (212 W. McKimmy St., Davis, IL 61019) on October 29 at 11 a.m.
