James Joseph O’Keefe
December 6, 1944 – October 28, 2025
James J. O’Keefe, age 80, passed away on October 28th, surrounded by his loving wife and children. Jim courageously endured a year-long battle with mesothelioma.
Born in the Bronx, New York, on December 6th, 1944, Jim was the son of Patrick and Mary O’Keefe (née Kostrna). One of seven siblings, his family later moved to Yorktown, New York, where he graduated from Yorktown High School. He always spoke fondly of his childhood in Yorktown. He was a proud “Cornhusker.”
After high school, James proudly enlisted in the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Vulcan and USS Nantahala. He received a medal for his service during operations in the Dominican Republic. After leaving the Navy, he began a 30-year career at IBM, where his dedication and good nature earned the respect of colleagues and friends alike.
Jim’s strong work ethic and love of people kept him active long after retirement. After moving to Florida, he enjoyed working concerts at the iThink Amphitheater and baseball spring training at Cacti Park of the Palm Beaches. He loved connecting with people and continued working until recently.
Above all, Jim was a devoted family man. He treasured time spent with his large and loving family and especially cherished being a father and grandfather. While raising his family in Mahopac, he coached countless Mahopac Sports Association teams and continued to coach and referee for years afterward. His active lifestyle led him to running—first alongside his children in the Annual Lake Run, and later completing three marathons on his own.
Jim also found joy and purpose in the outdoors. As a longtime member of the Mohegan Sportsmen’s Club, he taught archery to children and organized activities for members and their families. He inspired others to appreciate and respect nature, whether from his favorite tree stand on Turkey Mountain, his boat on the Hudson River, or later, the beautiful waters of North Palm Beach, Florida. In recent years, his greatest joy came from following the adventures of his grandchildren, whose lives he proudly celebrated from near and far.
Jim leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and strength. He will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, pride in his country, and his ever-optimistic “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” outlook on life. He touched many hearts and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A Memorial Mass and Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 29th, in New York. More details will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mahopac Sports Association and the Wounded Warrior Project in Jim’s honor.
