August 11, 1953 - September 27, 2025
James "Jim" Leonard Powell passed away peacefully at the age of 72 on September 27, 2025, in Oklahoma City, surrounded by his family after a courageous five-year journey with Alzheimer's disease.
Jim was born on August 11, 1953, in Hutchinson, Kansas, to parents Wendell and Polly Powell. The second of six children, Jim grew up in a lively household with his brothers Les and Jeff and sisters Connie, Susan, and Elaine. On July 5, 1974, Jim married the love of his life, Cheryl. Together they shared 51 years of marriage, building a full and happy life in Ponca City while raising their three daughters. Of all his many roles, Jim's proudest was being a loving father and later a devoted Papa to his grandchildren.
A lifelong learner, Jim earned degrees from UCO and OSU, including a Ph.D. in Applied Behavioral Studies. He went on to spend his long and fulfilling career as a school psychologist in Ponca City, where he found joy in working with children and helping them realize their full potential.
Jim had a servant's heart, a curious mind, and a knack for staying busy. He loved books and movies (especially science-fiction), and music - jazz most of all. He enjoyed swimming, cycling, bowling, camping, and traveling. At home, he was always working away at something in the garden or starting a new project around the house. Jim liked to keep moving and was up for just about anything.
Jim leaves behind his wife Cheryl; daughters and sons-in-law, Adrian and Michael Mix, Allison and Danny Burrows, and Hannah and Chip Nolen; and five grandchildren, Atticus, Violet, Oliver, Desmond, and Hazel. His family will remember him for his warmth, wisdom, humor, and steady presence. He was kind-hearted, quick to laugh, always ready to lend a hand, and never without good advice or a listening ear.
Though no formal services will be held at his request, Jim's family invites those who wish to honor his memory to make a donation to the Alzheimer's Association.
Jim will be remembered most as a devoted husband, dedicated father, proud papa, and a man who lived with curiosity, kindness, and an open heart.
