Jane Constance Confer of Baytown, Texas, passed from this life at the age of 71 on November 15, 2025. Born November 12, 1954 in Detroit, Michigan to father James and mother Vera Gilbert, Jane was raised in the Lauderdale Lakes area of Florida alongside her siblings Greg, Sarah, and Julie. Jane's love of travel and beautiful places began early after graduating high school in 1972, when she journeyed to Greece, before beginning her tour of the US in the state of Rhode Island. In true Jane fashion, she made her mark on Rhode Island in an unexpected way. A young woman of just 4 foot 9 inches, she assisted in welding on the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier, a past time she spoke of with pride. While living in Rhode Island, Jane welcomed her first daughter, Rosemary Lauren.

Life on the east coast in Newport News was followed by time in Winter Park, Florida, where second daughter, Martha Katherine, was born. A few years later Jane settled near Houston, Texas, where the family welcomed her only son, Michael Lawrence. Texas became her home, where she spent the rest of her days enjoying her five grandsons, Boss Kenneth, Beau Sawyer, Benjamin Everett, Boone Samuel, and Harrison Mays.

In life, Jane was many things. A mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend. She was determined, independent, funny, compassionate, and smart. She loved her cats, Wally and Alice, and cared for them impeccably. She found joy in traveling, and had the opportunity to visit beautiful places with friends after retiring from her career as a caregiver. She nurtured friendships, old and new, and had an active social life in her later years. It thrilled her to see her oldest daughter, Rosemary, travel the country and find success in her career. She never stopped being proud of her son, Mike, for serving in the Army and for providing a loving home for his sons with his wonderful wife, Kaitlyn. She loved and supported her daughter, Martha, and son in law, Boss, in their commitment to teach and lead their boys at home. She loved concerts, black and white movies, football and baseball, and foreign cuisine. She drank coffee like it was her job, listened to an eclectic array of music, and took excellent care of everything she owned. She was blind without her glasses, drove exactly the speed limit with two hands on the wheel at all times, and was stubborn to a fault. She would do anything for those she loved, and in life, that's exactly what she did.

When her children were young, Jane threw baseballs, drove to countless practices, helped with projects and homework, and made ends meet by herself, for her family. She worked tirelessly to provide, and also to set an example by pursuing higher education despite having three young children at home. Jane spent hours juggling school books and making dinner, studying pharmaceutical terms and taking kids to sports. Her dedication allowed her to engage in a career in caregiving, where she served others with patience and compassion until her retirement.

When they grew older, her children and their lives remained a priority for Jane. As Granny and Mom, she loved to spend time with her grandchildren, loved to hear about her children's travels and adventures, and took great pride in the people they grew up to be. She particularly enjoyed contributing to her grandsons' book collections, and supporting their interests. She purchased a ukulele for one, provided personalized education for others, and cheered at countless baseball games. Most importantly, she listened to everything they had to say, and appreciated them for exactly who they were.

Jane's life on earth ended unexpectedly, following a diagnosis of neuroinvasive West Nile Virus. Because she knew that her time in her body was temporary, Jane made known that she would like her remains to be donated to scientific research. It is our hope that her dedication to education leads to advancements in treating this devastating virus, and that others can benefit from our immeasurable loss.
