Janet Hunsaker Colt, 90, passed away peacefully at her son's home in Lenexa, Kansas, on November 13th, 2025. She was born on September 11th, 1935, in Galt, Missouri, to Donald Hunsaker and Helen Crowdis.
Janet's early life was marked by frequent moves due to her father's work as a heavy equipment operator, a skill in high demand before and during World War II. She lived in various cities including Las Vegas, Nevada, Salt Lake City, Utah, and San Francisco, California, as well as spending time on family farms in Galt and Browning, Missouri. Her nomadic childhood concluded when she entered Westport High School in Kansas City, Missouri, graduating in 1953.
In 1954, Janet married Robert Covell, and they had two children. After their divorce in 1958, she married Edward Adkins in 1959, with whom she had another daughter, Karen Stolfus. This marriage ended in divorce in 1976. Janet later married John Colt, and she was widowed upon his passing in 2013.
A passionate participant in Kansas City politics, Janet enjoyed a diverse and fulfilling career. In the mid-1960s and early 1970s, she worked in the Kansas City Missouri Mayor's office for Mayor Ike Davis. Following this, she and her husband, John Colt, owned and operated the Raytown Post newspaper. She then returned to Kansas City as Assistant Director of the City Clerk's office. Her final professional role was as Manager of Administration at Jackson County, Missouri, where she retired in 2000.
Janet loved to travel. She visited Europe, China, the Caribbean and Alaska. She loved spending part of her winters in Mexico on the beach sampling the local cuisine and drinking margaritas.
Janet was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Colt, a daughter in 2017 and a grandson, Shawn Pace. She is survived by her loving children, Karen Stolfus and Stephen Covell; two sisters, Donna Nigro and Deborah Bevan; five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
