Jean Elizabeth Kentgen (née Lundquist), age 93, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2025, in Chicago, Illinois, the city where she was born on December 11, 1931. Her long and full life was marked by resilience, dedication, and a deep love for her family and community.
Jean's journey through life was shaped by strength and adaptability. After the passing of her beloved husband James, she entered the workforce and built a meaningful career as a credit manager at Vienna Beef. Her loyalty and contributions were deeply valued by her colleagues there. Upon retiring at age 65, Jean embraced a new chapter by joining the pro shop staff at Sportsman's Country Club (now Heritage Oaks), where she became a cherished member of the team. Her warmth and reliability left a lasting impression in both workplaces.
Family was at the heart of Jean's world. She was the devoted mother of five children: Edward (Krys) Kentgen, Robert Kentgen, Patricia Kentgen, Kathleen (Jeff) Johanson, and John (Lynette) Kentgen. Though she endured the heartbreaking loss of her husband James and son Edward too soon, Jean's spirit remained strong as she continued to nurture her growing family.
Her legacy lives on through her eight grandchildren—Alyssa (Chris), Emily (Andy), Andrew (Emi), Morgan (Scott), Michael, Jamie, Matthew, and Daniel—each of whom brought joy to her life. In recent years, she delighted in welcoming two great-grandchildren, Berkley and Charlotte. Jean also shared close bonds with her sisters-in-law Geraldine Kentgen and MaryAnn (Tim) Sease.
Later in life, Jean discovered a passion for golf that blossomed into treasured friendships with Doreen, Carol, Nancy, Rita, and Katie. Whether on the course or off it, these relationships enriched her days with laughter and companionship.
An avid reader with an impressive collection of Nora Roberts novels, Jean enjoyed the escape into romance and mystery stories and listened to all the same books on audio when her eyes failed her later in life. She also had a special place in her heart for animals—especially her beloved grand-dogs Mack, Henry and Theo—and took great pleasure in their company.
Known affectionately as Mom or Grams/Grammie to those closest to her, Jean had an extraordinary gift for making everyone feel seen and welcomed. Her warm smile greeted each visitor with genuine interest and kindness. She especially cherished time spent with her furry companions and basked in the joy brought by baby snuggles from Berkley and Charlotte.
Jean lived a life defined by love—for family, friends, books, pets, golf games well played—and above all else, connection. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2025, from 05:00 PM to 07:00 PM at Heritage Oaks Golf Club, 3535 Dundee Road, Northbrook, IL. We will be celebrating Jean's fulfilling life on what would have been her 94th birthday.
