Mrs. Jessie C. Tossie, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, educator, and community servant, peacefully transitioned from labor to reward on October 8, 2025, in Ellenwood, Georgia. She was born on July 15, 1931, in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, to the late Samuel Joseph Caine and Julie Mae Caine of Branchville, South Carolina.
A lifelong advocate for education, Mrs. Tossie dedicated more than forty-four years of distinguished service as a teacher and school administrator in Jacksonville, Florida, and Trenton, New Jersey. Her devotion to nurturing the minds and hearts of students was unparalleled. Even after her formal retirement, she continued to share her wisdom and leadership for an additional ten years as a charter school administrator in Trenton—proving that her commitment to learning and community upliftment never ceased.
Mrs. Tossie's faith was the cornerstone of her life. She was a faithful and active member of Grace Cathedral Church in Trenton, where she worshipped with deep devotion and served with compassion and humility. Her faith guided her every action, and she lived out her Christian values through service, kindness, and steadfast integrity.
Deeply engaged in civic life, Mrs. Tossie believed in the power of participation and progress. She was actively involved in both local and national politics, attending two Democratic National Conventions and supporting numerous state, county, city, and ward campaigns. Her civic service was not for recognition, but for the betterment of her community—especially the residents of Trenton, whom she loved dearly.
Her generosity extended far beyond the classroom and the campaign trail. Mrs. Tossie volunteered countless hours to adult education programs, helping many earn their GED certifications and achieve renewed hope through learning. She also played a pivotal role in securing federal and local aid for Trenton families in need, personally delivering food and supplies or transporting neighbors to distribution centers when necessary. Her compassion and selflessness made her a beacon of light for those around her.
