In loving memory of Jesusita "Susie" dePedro
November 2, 1947 - October 20, 2025
Jesusita "Susie" dePedro, 75, of West Hartford, Connecticut, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends she cherished, and whose lives she brightened throughout her life.
Susie was born to Aracelia Burgos Ortiz and Francisco dePedro Luciano and raised in Patillas, Puerto Rico. She attended the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico and after graduating moved to Connecticut. She was the first person in her family to leave Puerto Rico for the mainland United States, and in doing so she opened the door to new opportunities for herself and her family. First her brother, Pedro, then her sister, Lourdes, and her mother. Her bravery to step out into the unknown laid the path for a new generation of dePedro's in Connecticut.
Once in Connecticut, Jesusita got her MSW from UConn and found her calling as a social worker for St. Francis Hospital, a position that allowed her to help women that just like her years earlier, were struggling to adapt to a new situation in life. During this time Jesusita met the love of her life, Osnaldo Lugo, from Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. They fell in love and soon married, and together had a beautiful daughter, Sara, whom they cherished.
Jesusita loved to travel and see new places and has visited Thailand, Egypt, Greece, Costa Rica, Spain, Turkey, Italy, and more. Known to brighten a room with her warmth and her outfits, she converted her spare bedroom to a walk in closet to accommodate her love for fashion, and never met an animal-print anything that she couldn't resist. She was part of a beloved group of friends that did everything together, and whose relationships date back many decades.
Though Susie's life was rich in love, it was also steeped in adversity. In 1992, she lost her daughter Maricely in childbirth. Then in 1993, Osnaldo tragically died, followed by the passing of her brother Pedro in 1996. Despite all of this, she remained a guiding light for her daughter and family, not only raising Sara as a single working mother, but also taking in her mother and sister when they fell ill. She pulled herself through unimaginable adversity to create a better life for her daughter and family, and while she had trouble expressing how she felt, her actions always spoke louder than words.
She is survived by her daughter Sara Golden and husband Zach Golden; her step-sons Jaime and Alexis Lugo; her niece Suysel dePedro Cunningham and husband Dave Cunningham; her nephew Pedro dePedro II and partner, Julie Kay.
