John McCune, age 73, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 24, 2025, after a courageous battle with liver cancer. Known to his friends as Mac, he was preceded in death by his father Claude, mother Evelyn, sisters Jean and Marilyn, as well as two brothers Tom and Jim. He is survived by his loving wife Bethany, daughter Sarah, son Thomas, as well as son Patrick (April) Amundsen, and granddaughter Izzy. He is also survived by his stepsons Ethan and Alden Scheib, his sister-in-law Mary McCune, nephews Michael (Ashli) McCune, Pat (Carla) Harris, and Charlie (Mariela) Harris, and niece Jeanne (Yuri) Teshler.

John was a graduate in the class of 1970 from Gabriel's High School in Lansing, Michigan, and then began a career in retail grocery, in which he worked for 45 years. In 1980, John associated himself with the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous which enabled him to live the last 45 years clean and sober. John developed his passion for storytelling, which he inherited from his father, and set his sights on The Moth storytelling stage from 2011 to present. John won numerous StorySLAMs and appeared in numerous GrandSLAMs in Detroit and Chicago.

John always said that his life was saved and changed by inches and seconds and that he stands on the shoulders of giants, so when you find someone like that in your life, hold on to them.

A celebration of John's life will be held on Sunday, November 9, 2025, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Alano Club East, 220 Howard Street, Lansing. Fellowship starts at 2:00 p.m. with coffee and desserts. Celebration starts at 3:00 p.m. John's remains will be interred with his family at the St. Joesph Catholic Cemetery, 2520 W. Willow, Lansing.
