John Scott Rhodes, 82, of Dearborn, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on September 30, 2025.
Born in Jackson, Michigan, on July 26, 1943, to Frank "George" and Margaret Rhodes, John lived a life rooted in dedication, curiosity, and love for his family and community. After graduating from Dearborn High School in 1961, John enlisted in the United States Army, where he served honorably until 1964. Returning home, he pursued his passion for technology, earning his Associate's Degree in Computer Science from Lawrence Technological University. John's career as a Systems Analyst with the City of Dearborn spanned 25 years, where he was admired both for his expertise and his unwavering integrity.
John's life changed forever in 1958, when he offered Carol a ride home from school—a chance meeting that blossomed into lifelong companionship. The two married in December 1961, and together faced life's many adventures, including a period in Germany during John's military service, where their first son, Johnny, was born. Returning to Michigan, they welcomed two more children, Cheryl and Scotty, building a family whose greatest joys were found together.
John cherished time spent with his loved ones traveling throughout Michigan, taking joyrides in classic cars, hosting family gatherings, and cheering for Michigan football. One of his proudest moments came in 2018, attending his granddaughter's graduation ceremony at Michigan Stadium, finally witnessing the proud tradition of the "Big House" firsthand.
Staying active well into his 70s, John could often be found trekking through the neighborhood or setting out on bike rides of 20 miles or more. He found a passion for vintage vehicles in his later years, resulting in a remarkable collection that included Lambretta scooters, Whizzer bikes, Ford Mustangs (his favorite), and a 1948 Ford Super Deluxe. John was also a lifelong learner, perpetually engaged with books, documentaries, and history—unless, of course, the Wolverines were on.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Frank "George" and Margaret Rhodes (Butters); his brother, Martin (Diane) Rhodes; and his son, John Alan Rhodes. He is survived by his devoted wife of over six decades, Carol Rhodes; daughter, Cheryl Eastman (Rhodes); son, Scott (Karen) Rhodes; grandchildren, Alexandra (Julian) Toma and Hudson Rhodes; and great-granddaughter, Emma Toma. He also leaves behind his beloved dog and best friend, Maggie.
A memorial luncheon will be held in John's honor on November 8, 2025, with details to be shared by the family. He will be laid to rest at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to consider a donation to support Parkinson's research at the University of Michigan. John's final years were marked by his courageous battle with Parkinson's disease, and throughout his illness, he demonstrated the same resilience, determination, and optimism that defined his life, inspiring those closest to him. Supporting these efforts will help advance crucial breakthroughs and provide hope to others facing similar challenges. Donations can be made online at: https://donate.umich.edu/vwYx9
