In Loving Memory
Jong Kai Chin, beloved family member, friend, and respected member of the community, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2025. Jong Kai will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, and generosity, as well as the many lives he touched throughout his life.
He was born in Taishan, China, the youngest of 5 brothers. An overachiever, he was ranked as a top student during his formative years. At 17 years of age, he was selected to work on a hydroelectric dam project. He pursued studies as a chemical engineer at the Advanced Technical Institute University in Guangdong, placing 1st in his class.
As the son of a Chinese-American businessman, Jong Kai emigrated to Hong Kong, then to America in 1958 with his wife, Pui Tong, where they eventually settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and began a new chapter filled with hope and opportunity. There, Jong Kai started various businesses and became deeply involved in the Chinese community, notably serving as president of the Gee How Oak Tin family association. He was appointed by Mayor John Street as Representative to the Mayor's Advisory Council on Asian Affairs from 2004-2007.
Jong Kai held a deep love for his Chinatown community and devoted himself to preserving its unique character and heritage. He actively fought against the highway expansion and other proposed projects including the relocations of sports arenas and a detention facility that threatened Chinatown's existence, standing as a steadfast protector of the community. His passion and advocacy ensured that future generations could continue to enjoy the vibrant culture and spirit of Chinatown.
His pastimes included painting and calligraphy. Jong Kai was very competitive as a table tennis player and would take on any challenger with zeal. His spirited approach to the game reflected his enthusiasm for life and his willingness to embrace challenges both on and off the table.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Pui Tong Chin (née Lee), his children Winnie (Michael), Raymond (Lucy), Judy (Arthur) and Nancy (Eric), 10 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.
