Joseph Edward Maur

1947 - 2025

With deep love and profound gratitude for his life, we share the passing of Joseph E. Maur, who left this world peacefully on November 5, 2025 after complications from illnesses now associated with his exposure to Agent Orange during his service as a "River Rat" in the Vietnam War. Joe served in the US Navy with honor as part of the Mobile Riverine Force (The Brown Water Navy) in the Mekong Delta. He carried the weight of that service with loyalty and pride, always honoring his fellow veterans and the country he served.

Joe was a man defined by quiet strength and a lot of humor. He is survived by many who loved him- his family including but not limited to his brother Arthur, niece Cindy, and grandson Nicholas, along with his friends who became family, and neighbors who stood by him with unwavering care and companionship.

Joe was a natural entrepreneur. Through his businesses (and many, many tag and garage sales!), his strong work ethic and sense of fairness, and his genuine friendliness, he built partnerships that did more than succeed. They endured. The people he worked with did not remain colleagues for long; they became lifelong friends, even beyond his retirement.

When he wasn't working, fishing on the Sound was his sanctuary. His happiness came not only from the fish he caught, but from the people he shared the boat with. He taught new anglers, young and old, aboard the Middlebank, and many learned to love fishing because of Joe.

His love of fishing was surpassed only by his joy in sharing his catch. While he could have filled his freezer many times over, he never brought home a catch for himself. Instead, the fish he kept were always given to his neighbors and loved ones. Feeding others was an act of love. He was a grill master, known for gathering people around his table, where meals were plentiful, laughter was loud, and everyone felt welcome.

In the later years of his life, Joe embraced adventure, traveling the world with his longtime dear friend, Linda. The stories they collected, the photos he displayed, and the souvenirs he cherished (and gifted readily!!) reflected a life lived fully, with curiosity and laughter.

He has now made his final journey to be reunited with his wife and best friend, Jan, whom he missed dearly every day.

In honor of his wishes, and in place of flowers, donations may be made to Homes for the Brave (https://homesforthebrave.org) a homeless shelter for veterans, so that those who have served our country may find the safety, dignity, and support they deserve.

A celebration of Joe's life will take place in the spring at a date to be announced.
